Triathlon Coaching FAQs
This section aims to answer the basic questions of what Warwick Dalziel Triathlon Coaching squad looks like and how the squad operates. For more detailed discussion please feel free to book into a call with Warwick.
Goals are subjective: there is never a one size fits all. Together Warwick and you, the athlete, look for the right strategy to target your best end result: teamwork starts right from the very beginning.
Coaching techniques vary. Whether it is training one on one or in a group session, WDTC is focused on bringing about a change in performance towards your goals.
Working across four pillars: psychological, mechanical, physiological and tactical matters to influence performance, we are always focused on you and your goals. So much so, that we bring in other professionals, when necessary, to ensure your goals are always front of mind. These might include a dietician or a podiatrist who can correct your running gait.
We conduct a range of testing so we can continually access the effectiveness of our coaching intervention. For example, this may be a ride power profile on-road test, a lab economy test or video your movement patterns so we can review them and look for the best strategies for your success.
Along with his academic credentials, Warwick is able to draw on years of practical experience: athletes who have competed nationally, internationally as well as at Commonwealth and Olympic Games. He has a special interest in making sure athletes are not prone to breakdown due to errors in mechanics or loading. We work with a support team of physiotherapists, podiatrists, nutritionists, doctors as well as strength & conditioning specialists to ensure you can go fast, every time.
This is never a one size fits all. Every athlete has their own goals: so, our contracts are negotiated around your desires, the obligations of being part of a group and the best possible outcomes for us as a team.
This also covers coaching cost agreements and responsibilities from the athlete and coach.
Athletes pay an annual fee January to December each year or pro rata to the end of December. This covers the cost of coaching time.
This is a shared journey: shared goals, shared aspirations and shared commitment. In a win-win scenario the coach also takes a percentage of prizemoney to sharpen the focus on the shared goals.
When we travel to a race or run a European camp the costs of the camp are split evenly amongst the participants of the event. In this system it means we are using a user pays model, so it is open and transparent for all athletes.
From time to time there may be costs for swim venues for lane hire etc. These expenses are paid on a per head basis on usage either to the coach to pass on or paid directly to the venue.
Squad values are reviewed annually and reflected in the behaviours we value.
The 2021 squad values are – respect, accountability, resilience and intent.
Typically, we are based in Brisbane from November to June: European based from June to September. Occasionally we run training camps outside of Brisbane at the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast or close to other races at other venues.
Our years of track record speaks for itself – when it comes to venues, we are well connected. Whether it is Brisbane or Europe, we have excellent access to swimming pools, run trails, bike courses and links with each triathlon community to ensure plenty of local racing to allow squad athletes to target the bigger events.
While our programs are structured and strategic to ensure maximum results, we provide plenty of variation for individuals to achieve specific goals. We mix it up: drawing on a mixture of squad, small group and individual squad sessions to achieve your goals. All squad members are given a list of the daily training sessions within a monthly outline for planning their daily lives to include study or down time.
You can view the current squad via the Meet the Squad page.
